Richard Norris, a man who received a full face transplant in 2012, recently shared some stories about his life, before and since, with GQ magazine.

When Norris was 22 years old, he suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the face.

Even after surgeries, his features remained mangled and compressed. His lower jaw had all but disappeared.

He became a recluse, living with his parents in their Virginia home.

His life changed when his mother discovered Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, a reconstructive surgeon.

After several procedures, Rodriguez determined that Norris was a perfect candidate for a face transplant.

The procedure took place in March of 2012, and the results were not only successful, but have been life changing.

Norris has since taken several online classes and embarked on a new romantic relationship.

He still has struggles and admits to self-medicating with alcohol.

The face, however, is something he’s comfortable with. He said, "When I look in the mirror, I see Richard Norris."
