Women from the Yao ethnic minority in Huangluo Yao Village, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, celebrated the first Long Hair Festival on April 9. The event attracted tens of thousands of visitors from home and abroad, to see the unique display of lengthy, well-brushed locks.<br />

Dressed in red, locals held various activities, such as combing their hair together by the river, performing dances, hosting a coming-of-age ceremony for young women, and singing in antiphonal style for tourists. <br />

With a population of more than 300, the Yao village has more than 80 women who grow their hair longer than 1.4 meters. The longest hair in the community reaches 2.3 meters. <br />
The village has made the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's first long hair village. Local people believe that long hair brings longevity, wealth and good fortune. <br />

This unique collection consists of nearly 100 collars that were collected by Irish medieval scholar John Hunt and his wife, Gertrude. Extended by the Leeds Castle Foundation, the collection has pieces that span history from medieval to Victorian times.<br>

In the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, the forests of Europe were full of predators that were happy to rip out the throats of the hunting dogs that entered their territory. To protect their faithful companions, hunters would fit the dogs with thick iron collars covered in impressive spikes.<br>

Another intriguing period for the currently mundane pet staple was the 18th century, when they became more decorative and less functional – baroque leather embellished with metalwork and velvet, sometimes bearing the arms of royal owners. While tags are now commonly marked with simple identification and medical information, many of these bear inscriptions and quotes that had significance to the dog's master.<br>

In a quiet courtyard in the suburbs of New Delhi, inside a low-slung concrete building, the assistant curator and guides of Sulabh International Museum of Toilets eagerly awaits for visitors. The museum is small, with just one long room, but it’s possibly the world’s only toilet museum, and it’s location in the Indian capital is all the more important.<br>
<br>
Hygiene and sanitation is one of India’s most pressing issues. An astonishing 60% of the country’s 1.2 billion people defecate in the open because they do not have access to safe and private toilets. The numbers were probably worse in 1970 when Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, a humanitarian and social worker, introduced pay-to-use public toilets in a small village in Patna, Bihar. At first the people laughed at his idea, but now over 15 million people across the country use public toilets constructed by Sulabh International, a non-profit he founded. <br>

Sulabh International’s mission is to promote safe sanitation habits and provide public toilet facilities throughout India. It builds and maintains hundreds of public toilets in major cities, including those outside tourist attractions such as the Red Fort in Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra, as well as towns and villages across the vast nation. With 50,000 volunteers devoted to the cause, Sulabh International is India’s largest nonprofit organization.<br>

The museum, located in the offices of the organization, traces the history and development of toilet system around the world from the brick commodes of the ancient Harappan settlement near Pakistan, five thousand years ago, through the Middle Ages to the modern day toilet with electrically controlled flush system, through a series of privies, chamber-pots, toilet furniture, bidets and water closets, accompanied by a healthy number of images, drawings, photographs, and graphics. The museum also provides a chronological account of developments relating to technology, toilet related social customs, toilet etiquettes, prevailing sanitary conditions and legislative efforts of the times.<br>

Among its most prized possessions is a flush pot devised in 1596 by Sir John Harrington, a courtier of Queen Elizabeth I, a gem-studded bided of Queen Victoria, table-top toilets from England and a couple of highly decorated commodes from Austria. Some of the toilets of these period were disguised. There is a French one that looks like a stack of books, and an English one which resembles a treasure chest.<br>
<br>
Hanging on the walls are display boards with poems, comics, jokes and cartoons related to toilet humor. But one of its most amusing displays is a full-size replica throne from the court of the French King, Louis XIII, with a hidden commode underneath it. The King used it to relive himself while still in court.<br>
<br>
The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets was opened in 1992, and since then it has welcomed some 100,000 visitors. <br>

La Canada-Flintridge, California's Graystone Manor was originally built in 1937, but in 1971, Disney theme park designer Robert F. McDonnell and his family started remodeling it and kept touching it up throughout the decades until it was sold in 2012 for $1.4 million.<br>

Bus stops come in all shapes and sizes. In the small Japanese town of Konagai, in the outskirts of Isahaya, in Nagasaki Prefecture, they come in five different flavors — watermelon, strawberry, orange, muskmelon and tomato. These quirky bus stops were originally built for the 1990 Travel Expo in order to attract visitors arriving from various location.<br>

The actual Expo was hosted by the city of Osaka. It ran for a straight six months and attracted over 23 million visitors. The fair was such a success that a host of smaller fairs expressing related themes were held across Japan. <br>

Konagai too held an exhibition entitled “Nagasaki Journey”, and these sixteen fruit-shaped bus shelters were part of it. Since then, the stands have become a local tourist attraction in the region. <br>

Konagai’s fruity bus stops gained a wider audience after 2005 when the town, along with four others, were merged into the larger city of Isahaya, allowing them to be discovered by more travellers and tourists. The bus stops are still functional and have held remarkably well for a quarter of a century. They appear to be well maintained too.<br>

Started by a retired master plumber, Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum is an ever-growing collection of artfully decorated bathroom castoffs that show off the more whimsical side of a notoriously dirty fixture.<br>

Covering every inch of the museum's walls and even hanging from the rafters are toilet seats and lids decorated with all manner of mixed media (save fecal matter, thankfully). Smith was inspired by his father (also a master plumber) who had a penchant for mounting plaques and trophies. Smith noticed a similarity between the mounting boards and the toilet seats he worked with every day, and soon began collecting used seats that he would then paint or adorn with bright trinkets. <br>

Working in his garage, the space filled up over the years with his creations and once the local media caught on to his idiosyncratic arts, the attention was great enough that Smith decided to open it as a "museum" to anyone who wanted to take a look at his toilet seats. <br>

He even encourages visitors to bring in their own toilet seats since he prolific enough to always be running out.
